CLOWNING WORKSHOPS
What's it all about?
Get over yourself!
What is a clown? What do they do? Why does it matter?
Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of clown. Forget about the big shoes and red noses for a moment, these workshops are about finding joy in performance, embracing failure, and moving past fear in the quest for authenticity.
The clown is a character, an energy, and an action all at once. Some people say it is a calling, others call it a gimmick, but clowns have been present in theatre for centuries. It takes patience and practice to inhabit the role of clown, and on this short course you will get the opportunity to play with a group of like-minded fools in an inclusive, supportive environment.
In our weekly afternoon sessions we will explore the work of contemporary clowns and put theory into practice at EAS Studios in Summerhall. We will laugh, we will cringe, and we might even learn something along the way.
Workshops will cover a range of topics including;
● Play as Performance
● The Flop
● Improvisation and Blocking
● Clown Dynamics
● Silent Comedy
By the end of the series we hope you will feel emboldened, inspired, confident, and very, very stupid. When you step out of your comfort zone you move into a magical new place where anything can happen, and that is exactly where the clown is at home. For newcomers to the artform these sessions offer an easy introduction to clown training. Experienced clowns will find a comfortable space to practice, play, and explore physical
comedy. Everyone is welcome; in previous series we have welcomed actors, stand-up comedians, musicians, and civilians from all age groups.
If you’ve read this far then it's likely this course is for you.
